Hello, welcome to Red Ribbon Communications.
I love words, words are amazing, words can educate our minds, fire our imagination, colour our memories and describe our dreams. Words are all around us and in our digital world accessible 24/7.
As a child, I was a voracious reader, my favourites Enid Blyton’s Faraway Tree trilogy and the Wishing Chair adventures – pure escapism into another world more magical than my own.
In my teens, I progressed to Science Fiction and marvelled at the possibility of adventures on other worlds in other times. I’m still searching for an affordable edition of the last story in the Dumarest saga, Child of Earth by E.C. Tubb, twenty years after reading the first.
My favourite time of day is bedtime with the ‘mini-Fairbanks’ – Julia Donaldson absolutely rocks! Feeling self-conscious about babbling baby talk to the new babes I read to them from day one instead.
My proudest moment this week was overhearing my three and three-quarter year old daughter ‘read’ the entire Gruffalo, word perfect, to her rapt little brother, 22 months old.
Now, clearly, she wasn’t reading the actual words, but prompted by the glorious illustrations and wondrous rhyming verse she already knows the story word for word – child genius!
We have this quote stencilled on our dining room wall, primarily to inspire the kids but I think it is so true:
“The more that you read, the more things you will know.
The more that you learn, the more places you will go.”
That’s me, a lifelong learner, I like to discover new things and words facilitate that. My career path spans administration, graphic design, marketing, event management and internal communications.
If you then consider studying in the USA, Wales and Ireland as well, I’ve written many words over the years. Everything from papers, assignments, strategic marketing and communications plans to marketing copy, advertisements, surveys, brochures and posters.
It all led to an interest in and the discovery of an aptitude for proofreading – so after some more studying and retraining here I am, freelancing in the beautiful wilds of Wales.
Perfection is, of course, subjective, it can be hard to find and often, even harder to achieve. However, surely it is human nature to strive to be the best we can be, do the greatest job and achieve our goals, so let’s apply that to our use of words!
Whether it was a lapse of concentration or a lack of attention to detail, time or knowledge, I am hugely disappointed whenever I notice typos, mistakes, inconsistencies and design/layout errors in everyday life.
Perhaps the majority of people don’t notice, or worse don’t care, but happily I am not one of them. I’m passionate about words, words can change our lives and we can change the world. It is my mission to ensure my clients words communicate exactly what they want to say to their audience.
So, that’s a little bit about us. Red Ribbon Communications is ‘all about words’ and I hope I can inspire you to use them, explore them and love them too.
If I can assist you in any way, please get in touch and I look forward to hearing from you.
